Beginner Tips for Using AI in Special Education

ai in special education Jun 09, 2025

You don’t need to be tech-savvy to use AI in advocacy—you just need a few tips. If you’re new to tools like ChatGPT, here’s how to use them safely and strategically to support your child’s IEP.

Start simple. Think of ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner, not a special ed expert. It’s not going to know your child, but it can help you generate drafts, prep for meetings, and organize documentation.

Start with Better Prompts

The quality of your results depends on the prompt. Instead of “Help with my IEP,” try:

“Write a SMART goal for a 5th grader with ADHD who struggles with task initiation. Include 2 benchmarks.”

Add the grade, area of struggle, and type of output you want (email, bullet list, goal draft). It makes all the difference.

Review, Don’t Copy

Never use AI output without reading it carefully. You’ll often need to adjust for tone, personalize examples, and reword phrases. This is still your voice—AI just helps shape the draft.

Keep It Anonymous

Avoid names, school districts, diagnoses, or identifiers. Use “my child,” “a 7th grade student,” or “elementary school setting” instead.
