What AI Can (and Can’t) Do for Your IEP Prep

ai in special education Jun 11, 2025

AI is powerful, but it's not a silver bullet. If you're using ChatGPT to support your advocacy work, it's critical to know where it shines—and where it falls short.

When used well, AI can make your IEP prep more efficient and effective. But used blindly, it can introduce errors, generic language, or even misinformation. Here's what to expect.

What It Can Do

  • Draft formal parent input statements from your notes
  • Help revise vague IEP goals using SMART criteria
  • Summarize evaluations and prior written notices
  • Generate IEP questions or talking points for meetings

What It Can't Do

  • Understand your child’s personality or specific needs
  • Capture emotion, nuance, or relationship dynamics
  • Give legal advice or interpret school policy

AI is best used as a co-author, not a decision-maker. Use it to generate drafts, brainstorm ideas, or rephrase confusing language. But the final version? That still needs your judgment, insight, and expertise as your child’s best advocate.
